Dawn Wood's

solo atlantic challenge 2019

DAY 4 (8)

16th January
I am actually moving again! What a great feeling to be on the move. I have got some work to do to make up the world record pace but it seems that I am up for the challenge!

I have had 3 or 4 small birds follow me all the way from the start. No idea what they are but it’s nice to have them along for the ride. They look sort of like swifts? No more other wildlife today just lots of big waves.

Now this is more like it, although the last few days slowed me down I don’t regret them at all. I would never had the moments with the turtle or dolphin without that lull in the weather. It also showed me that I can really achieve things that at the start seem too tough to handle.

There are some quite big waves out here, I would guess 20ft but it’s difficult to judge. Everything looks big from a 21ft boat. I have taken some video to post when I get back. See what you reckon.

Now what is fun is surfing down the waves, I line myself up with one, put in a few power drives to get me to the top, then – yeeee haaaa! –  see how fast I can get the boat down the other side. When the ocean sends you waves you just have to ride them!! Absolutely brilliant fun!

I have been getting word from Aurora HQ that there has been quite some support on social media especially a ‘Facebook wave?’ Thank you so much to everyone who is supporting me, please keep it going it really is helping.

In fact I was thinking this is a bit like the Truman show, only I know I am in it! My world extends to 3 miles around me like a big circle, and it’s usually just me in it. But I know so many people are watching me and encouraging me along. The thought that you can all see my track is quite a comforting feeling and also means I have more reason not to slack as you will know!!

I look forward to catching up with all your messages when I get to Barbados. In the meantime I hope you enjoy reading my blogs and look forward to sending you the next one.

ps.The chase is on!!
